Mardi Gras

If you are lucky enough to be on a parade route, you can expect all kinds of company that day. It's really like an immense block party. People come hours ahead of time to get a good spot, and bring along coolers of drinks and sandwiches, which they are willing to share with anyone around them. And many of the houses on the parade route have open house, refreshments for all. Here are the people gathered in front of our monastery wall, waiting for the parade to start. Notice the tiny children on stepladders so they can see the parade. They fasten a seat on top of the ladder, put the tots in the seat, fasten a seat belt of sorts so they won't fall out, then the adult stands on the steps of the ladder to help them catch the beads and stuffed animals that the riders will throw.
